RCMP CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS
100 YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE RMWB
Freedom of the City
In the midst of shooting a project for the Economic Development branch of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the RCMP held centennial celebrations to mark the 100 years of service in the region. We were asked to cover the day of the parade and the detachment formally receiving the freedom of the city from Fort McMurray's mayor.
The morning began with officers lining up to practice parade manoeuvres for their performance later through the main street of Fort McMurray. The atmosphere was both lighthearted and celebratory but never compromising the underlying discipline of the RCMP.
After a quick lunch, everyone changed into their iconic red serge and took their places.
It was mesmerizing to watch the hundreds of officers in formal serge while marching in formation down the main street. From the canine unit to musicians and air support, the diversity of the force was impressive. Even the ceremonial RCMP guidon was in attendance all the way from Ottawa for the ceremonies.
What a great way to celebrate 100 years of service to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
